It's been a long weekend for those of you that work and a busy one for me! My friends from out of town were all in this weekend which was great. I love seeing them and catching up on life, but sometimes it reminds me of how old I am becoming.
Saturday was spent chatting on the lake, snacking, and what is a weekend without some loud music. JJ and I went to Stir to see Better than Ezra because my mom and her boyfriend scored us free tickets...thank you. It was a great show the band was funny and I was surprised at all of the songs that I recognized. It's funny though, Better than Ezra is not a band that I would say I am a fan of, but it was a good time.
Monday fireworks at Rosenblatt and good food at a friends house. I had a good time!
I seem to be struggling with the sleep and feeling good in general lately. Two out of the last three days I have been lucky to get to sleep by 3am and last night I saw 5:30 am click up on my alarm. I wasn't pleased when I woke up at 9:00 am. I am now afraid to nap. I want to go to bed early tonight and get back into the swing of a normal life. Nothing new on jobs. I am soooo tired.........UPDATE...A Few short hours later:For some reason this blog made my mother cry (see my only comment). So just in case I thought I should clarify the girl is not crying because I am sad. She is crying on the Fourth of July because of the sad, sad state of affairs in our beloved country. I chose not to comment on this because I am tired and didn't feel much like ranting and raving today.
Nothing new to tell on the news front. I applied at a temp agency today that was suggested by a friend this weekend so I'm crossing my fingers to get a job worth working! My interview at Northwest was awful! I liked the principal at Blackburn though and I'm again in a waiting status.
I had a few friends over for a little too much wine and some grilling on the patio. I also am currently begging forgiveness from one friend. I didn't invite him and I was being childish to say the least.
Other than that I'm looking forward to the 4th of July weekend. It's great to see all my old friends that come into town and spend the day at the lake. I am also going to see the Better than Ezra concert which should be fun and it's free which makes it even better!
Other than that my life isn't too exciting. It's been interesting to discuss the smoking ban that Omaha's City Council just voted on. As a smoker (who is going to have to quit soon) I prefer to have a right to do as I choose with my own body at the bar, and I'm curious to see if this filters more business into Council Bluffs. I believe it is going to affect the older smokers more than my generation. I think we have become complacent about allowing the government to make our decisions for us and most of us just go along with it. We are the generation that has grown up with seat belt laws, helmet laws, and even a law against kids riding motorized scooters. What happened to survival of the fittest? The government seems to feel the need to "take care of us" - even as a pretty liberal person- this doesn't sit too well with me.
On another note to discuss government funding and education. I have to say I'm sick of the whining. While I interviewed at NW they cried about lack of funding and the inconsistent at OPS that segregate minorities. This was after they explained that they had one of 4 schools in the countries that had cox communications and internet in each room, two new computer labs, and a new tv and dvd for each classroom. I understand this school needs to be bigger to house all the students and eliminate some problems, but it seems to me that they have most of what they need to foster a positive learning environment that will assist students to being successful adults. There are schools in this country that don't even have current textbooks, so are the inequities perceived or reality? I also noticed that these schools had 4-5 deans of students that is at least $300,000 out of the school budget. I question this middle management as a necessity...I can't verify this because I have yet to work in one of these schools, but I have worked at schools that do not have a dean at all and they seem to function pretty well. Schools have become too much like a business - they see a need for too many supervisors and not enough worker bees.
Well I have been unemployed for a very long time now (5.5 months 4 of which I was student teaching) and I am officially frustrated with looking for work. It's weird I'm trying to find a teaching job for next year and a simple, stupid job to get me through the summer. Seems like a fairly easy task for someone with years of experience doing stupid jobs I hate, but it appears that it is not as simple as it sounds because I haven't had a single interview despite my qualifications. I have had multiple people look at my resume it seems to be in good shape and I try to kiss a little booty in my cover letters, so what else can a girl do?There is also this messy business of trying to find a teaching job. I have had interviews here (Bellevue, Blackburn, and tomorrow Northwest High), and each interview they are painfully optimistic and you can get no reading from them one way or the other. Then there is the decision to take a job. Blackburn and Northwest are not jobs that are overly thrilling, but they are a paycheck. Bellevue seems like a great place to work and they are still interviewing (I interviewed with them more than a month ago-gotta tell you I'm not overly confident). I have also applied in TX and have not heard anything. J keeps telling me that the word around town is they don't start interviewing until July, but one school I applied at there has removed the English positions from their openings...again not getting a good vibe. The other school there said that I need to complete the application process. I found this response odd since I already had completed the process...again probably not a good omen. So anyway here I am loving the sleeping in, but fearing the bills each month. Nebraska unemployment is pathetic. I guess that $250 a week is all I get since I've never made babies, but something tells me a few little munchkins running around and my check would be much larger - despite the fact that then I could also get additional food, health care, and who knows what other benefits. Such is the way of the US of A.
