Smoking Ban Looophole

I found two things interesting about this article I quoted one and second was that they spent 1.5m pounds on trying to get prisoners to quit smoking...seriously what a waste of money.

"The director-general of the prison service, Phil Wheatley, has warned MPs that a ban would drive smoking underground: "You don't have a lot going for you in prison. You are deprived of most things you might ordinarily enjoy ... To take yet another thing away will not be wildly popular with a group who are not always charming and pleasant in their behaviour."

Anyway it made me laugh so I thought I should share.

Observation of an "Urban" High School

Well I've been doing very little work today, but definitely enjoying the down time.

My observation of a "urban" high school is now complete. I had an amazing experience ONHS. It was a chance to see what it is like for teachers who are faced with students who lack motivation and support...oh wait...isn't that the majority of high school students today. I do have to say I think these students got away with a lot more than I ever thought a student could, but it wasn't shocking really just a little surprising.

I think many people may have looked at an experience like this as scary or eye-opening. I guess the environment was just slightly worse than what I expected for some things and then much better for others. It just shows how strong and patient teachers need to be to deal with the stress and current demands of teaching in America's public schools.

The most frustrating thing to me is how much kids don't care. Seriously they have to work hard to be this lazy. I can't imagine just going to school and doing nothing. Then you consider that they can get a GED...well some of these students read at a 5th grade level. They can't even pass the GED with reading skills that are that bad. It makes a person want to point fingers at parents and schools, but really it boils down to the individual. It's time we make people accountable for themselves. It is the individuals responsibility to get the education that they need to be successful. Many students just don't care and that is why they are in these positions. Even students with learning disabilities have a wealth of resources they can tap into if they choose to succeed.

Looking toward my teaching career I guess it's a matter of choosing my battles. This includes what I focus on for classroom management, curriculum, and individual students. I think this is something that will only come with time and experience. To really know what is important to get across to each and every student that walks into my classroom.
